Happy Birthday to my man Russell Okung (b. 1987).
Okung had to grow up fast. The son of Nigerian immigrants, he lost his father at age four. Shot dead on the job at a gas station. His mother's strong faith and fierce work ethic helped the family survive and enabled Okung to excel at school and sports.
Drafted in 2010 to succeed the irreplaceable Walter Jones, Okung has been consistently solid at left tackle. He made the Pro Bowl in 2012. With the departure of Max Unger, he has emerged as the undisputed leader of our young, raw, under-performing offensive line.
When he blew out the candles, I hope he wished for better O-Line chemistry and smarter playcalling from Darrell Bevell.
In 2013, he ran with the bulls in Pamplona. I'm guessing the steers gave him a wide berth.
